Lane was raised by his father, Monte Kiffin, who still works as a football coach and currently works for Lane as his player personnel analyst. Lane attended Bloomington Jefferson High School, graduating in 1994 then enrolled at Fresno State University after being offered a football scholarship, he graduated in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree.
He began his coaching career when he became a graduate assistant at Colorado State University, where he remained for a year before joining the Jacksonville Jaguars as their quality control assistant.
