Who is Matthew Goode?
British actor Matthew William Goode was born in Exeter, Devon, England, on April 3, 1978, making Aries his zodiac sign. He has appeared in over 50 TV series and movies, and he is perhaps best known for starring as Charles Stoker in the 2013 thriller film “Stoker” which Park Chan-wook directed, and also starred Nicole Kidman and Mia Wasikowska. It follows India whose father has passed away, as her mysterious Uncle Charlie has now come to live with her and her mother; the film won seven of its 49 award nominations.
Education and early life
Matthew grew up in Exeter with his brother and three half-siblings, by their mother Jennifer, a theater director and nurse, and father Anthony, who was a geologist.
Matthew attended Exeter School and was mainly involved in sports during his time there, as he played football for the school team and also enjoyed playing basketball and tennis. He graduated in 1996 and then enrolled at the University of Birmingham, but eventually transferred to the Weber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London, graduating in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree.
Roles in TV series
Matthew’s TV series debut was playing Casper in the 2002 episode “Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister” of the adventure comedy “The Wonderful World of Disney”, and over the next few years appeared in an episode of the crime drama “The Inspector Lynley Mysteries” , the drama miniseries “He Knew He Was Right” and the crime mystery “Marple”.
His next role came in 2012 when he was cast as Captain Gray in both episodes of the romantic war miniseries “Birdsong”, which also starred Eddie Redmayne and Clemence Poesy, follows a British soldier fighting in the World War I trenches in northern France; the miniseries won two of 11 award nominations. Also in 2012, Matthew starred as Rex Clarke in both episodes of the drama miniseries “The Poison Tree”.
In 2013, he played the lead character Stanley in all six episodes of the drama mini-series “Dancing on the Edge”, which also starred Chiwetel Ejiofor and Joanna Vanderham, and which follows a black jazz band that gained popularity in the 1930s. London; the miniseries won five of 21 award nominations. Some of Matthew’s next notable performances included starring as George Wickham in the 2013 romantic mini-series “Death Comes to Pemberley”, playing Finn Polmar in 28 episodes of the crime mystery “The Good Wife” in 2014 and 2015, and playing Henry Talbot . in seven episodes of the romantic drama “Downton Abbey”, also in 2014 and 2015.
One of Matthew’s most recent TV series roles was playing lead character Matthew Clairmont in the romantic fantasy “A Discovery of Witches”, which also starred Teresa Palmer and Alex Kingston, and follows the historian and witch Diana Bishop who is aided by vampire Matthew Clairmont. to solve the mysteries of Ashmole 782; the series aired from 2018 through 2022 and won two of 12 award nominations.
Roles in movies
Matthew’s debut film role was voicing various characters in the 2003 animated action comedy “Bounty Hamster” while gaining popularity after being cast to play Ben Calder in the critically acclaimed 2004 romantic comedy “Chasing Liberty” directed by Andy Cadiff, and which also features Mandy Moore and Mark Harmon. It follows Anna, the daughter of the US President, who has escaped her bodyguards in Prague, Czech Republic and is now traveling through Europe with her boyfriend Ben; the film was nominated for five awards.
Some of Matthew’s roles in the rest of the decade were in the 2005 romantic comedy “Imagine Me & You”, the 2007 crime thriller “The Lookout” and the 2009 crime romantic drama “A Single Man”.
In 2013, he starred as Captain Sir John Lindsay in the biographical romantic drama “Belle” directed by Amma Asante, which also starred Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Emily Watson. It follows the bi-racial daughter Dido Elizabeth Belle of Royal Navy Captain Sir John Lindsay as she is raised by her great-uncle Lord William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield, and the film won 13 out of 45 award nominations.

Matthew is also known for playing Hugh Alexander, one of the main characters in the 2014 biographical thriller “The Imitation Game” directed by Morten Tyldum and also starring Keira Knightley and Benedict Cumberbatch. It follows Alan Turing as he attempts to crack the German Enigma code during World War II, and the film won 49 of 214 award nominations, including an Oscar win for Best Writing, Adapted Screenplay.
Matthew’s three most recent film roles were in the 2021 action-adventure thriller “The King’s Man”, the 2022 animated comedy “The House” (voice role), and the 2022 historical action “Medieval”; he is currently filming for the upcoming movie “Freud’s Last Session”.

Love life and woman
Matthew prefers to keep his personal affairs to himself and not much has been shared about his wife and children. He and British non-celebrity Sophie Dymoke are known to have exchanged vows in 2007 in a private ceremony attended by no more than 150 of their closest friends and relatives; Sophie prefers to stay away from the media, and even her profession has not been disclosed. She gave birth to their daughter Matilda Eve on March 1, 2009, second daughter Teddie Eleanor Rose followed in September 2013 and son Ralph was born in August 2015.
Matthew is yet to talk about other women he has been with, he has been married to Sophie Dymoke since April 2023 and they have three children together.

One of Matthew’s best friends is popular British actor Laurence Fox, while he is also good friends with actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Ben Whishaw.
His half-sister Sally Jennifer Meen is a popular British TV presenter.
“The Sunday Times Magazine” listed Matthew on their ‘Britain’s Finest Rising Stars’ list, while some of the other actors included in the list include Eddie Redmayne, Hugh Dancy and Romola Garai.
One of his favorite movies is the 1978 biographical documentary “The Last Waltz”; Matthew’s favorite actor is Benedict Cumberbatch, and some of the other movies he likes to watch include ‘Penguins of Madagascar’, ‘1917’ and ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’.
