Early life and family

For a long time (Dan’s filings claimed the exact period was six weeks), Markel did not know the whereabouts of his wife and his children, as Wendi hid the information with the help of members of her family, most notably her mother and brother Charles. . The divorce was finalized in July 2013. Wendi and Dan shared joint custody of their children, when Dan filed an injunction barring Wendi from moving to Miami with the children. In 2009, Dan wrote the book “Privilege or Punish: Criminal Justice and the Challenge of Family Ties” while still working as a law professor at Florida State University.

On July 18, 2014, Dan was shot while staying alone at his home in Tallahassee, Florida. On July 19, 2014, he died of the injuries in the hospital where he was taken too late, as the dispatcher who received the call from Dan’s neighbors did not label the call as a real serious call.
