He grew up alongside his two siblings in North Hollywood, Los Angeles – his parents divorced in 1967, after which his mother apparently married and divorced several men, including Jim Robbins, a former baseball player, whom Tony adopted when he was 12 – Tony has described his childhood as “abusive” and “chaotic,” so he left home at age 17.
He began his career working for Jim Rohn, the late author and motivational speaker, to promote his seminars, and in his early twenties, Tony became a practitioner of Ericksonian hypnosis and neurolinguistic programming, as well as learning how to firewalk.

He is interested in sports and in 2014 bought rights to create a Major League Soccer club with several other investors, which started competing in 2018. Along with Peter Guber and Ted Leonsis, he also bought eSports gaming organization Team Liquid in 2016, and it went on to win The International 7 Dota 2 Tournament for around $24 million.
Tony founded the Anthony Robbins Foundation in 1991, which aims to help the homeless, the elderly and the hungry.
