Youth and education
Alex was raised in Los Angeles by Whoopi and her first husband Alex’s father Alvin Martin, to whom she was married from 1973 to 1979, when they divorced for unknown reasons.
After her mother married director and cinematographer David Claessen in 1986, he took good care of both of them, but he and Whoopi still divorced in 1988. In 1994, after Alex had already moved out, Whoopi married Lyle Trachtenberg, but the marriage only lasted a year.
Alex was motivated by her mother to launch her acting career, and Whoopi also helped her win her first roles.
