This iPad Mini 6 case offers MagSafe-like charging capabilities

If you want to conveniently charge a MagSafe-style iPad Mini, the latest case from Pitaka is here for you. The new $79 MagEZ Case Pro for the sixth-generation iPad Mini (aka the iPad Mini 6) features magnetic points on the back that send power through the iPad’s USB-C port when used with the included pad. Or you can use it with the $129 MagEZ charging stand, which raises the tablet and provides a second Qi charging point in the base for a phone or headphones.

There are some drawbacks to this approach. Pitaka’s case doesn’t use the magnets built into the back of the iPad Mini and blocks access to the USB-C port, allowing you to use the magnetic pad as the nothing but way to charge the device. Also forget about transferring data over a wired connection while the case is on. The case itself is stiff rubber with a carbon fiber-like weave, which should protect against most average drops, but isn’t the most rugged I’ve seen. It also doesn’t cover the screen like Apple’s folio cases do, so you’ll probably want to pair it with some sort of screen protector.

On the plus side, the case can charge Apple Pencil on the right side, and there’s a small accessory that grabs the Pencil and holds it in place better when you toss the iPad in a bag.

Those drawbacks aside, the MagEZ certainly lives up to the easy part of its name, as charging just requires popping the case near the base and letting the magnets do their thing. The magnetic pull is strong and the stand easily holds the iPad in either landscape or portrait orientation. (The stand also tilts, but has no height adjustment.)

Neither the case nor the stand comes with a charging brick, and Pitaka recommends at least a 45W USB-C Power Delivery brick if you want to charge the iPad and a phone simultaneously at full speed on the stand. (The base station supports 7.5W charging with iPhones or charging up to 15W with other Qi devices.)

However, you really have to go for magnetic charging to make this setup worthwhile, as neither the case nor the stand are particularly cheap. But if that’s not blocking you, both accessories should be available starting today, May 30.
