He was the sixth child of 13 from parents Francis Thomas and Jane Fahey. His father worked in a clothing store and his mother was a devoted housewife. Jeffrey grew up in Buffalo, New York, where he attended school, but at age 17 he left home and hitchhiked to Alaska, eventually making his way to Europe for a backpacking trip, then visiting countries like Israel and Afghanistan.

Jeff Fahey attended Father Baker’s High School in the city he grew up in, but it wasn’t until age 25 that he took the opportunity to continue his education.
