Dennis DeYoung was raised in Roseland, Chicago, by his parents, Maurice and Loraine DeYoung. DeYoung began his career at age 14 with two of his neighbor friends, Chuck and John Panozzo, in 1961. In the late 1960s, the trio recruited two guitarists, James Young and John Curulewski.

Before becoming Styx in 1970, DeYoung and his bandmates renamed themselves TW4 in 1968. And the band quickly found success. DeYoung spent his early years in the suburbs of Chicago, where he also learned music. During this time, the band performed in school halls and other small venues. They soon gained national and international fame.

A self-taught keyboardist, DeYoung quickly rose to become one of rock’s most valuable keyboardists. Through his keyboard playing, DeYoung has described many of his steps while performing a concert.
