Career
Fangio was a defensive back at Dunmore High in 1975. From 1979 to 1981, he was his high school’s linebackers and defensive coordinator.
In 1982, he led the defense of Milford Academy. He then became a defensive assistant coach for the Philadelphia/Baltimore Stars in 1984. Fangio was the New Orleans linebackers coach from 1986 to 1994. During that time, he coached the legendary “Dome Patrol”
In Fangio’s nine seasons in New Orleans, the Saints were in the Top 5 in total defense (300.0 ypg – 5th), sacks (408 – 3rd), scoring defense (18.1 ppg – 4th), and takeaways (336 – T- 3rd) .
In 1995, Fangio joined the Carolina Panthers. Dom Capers coached from 1995-1998. In his first season as a defensive coordinator, he helped the team reach the NFC Championship Game. Sr Fangio coached the Colts defense from 1999 to 2001.
In 2002, Fangio joined the Houston Texans. Served as Dom Capers defensive coordinator in Houston from 2002-2005. Fangio joined the Ravens in 2006 as a special assistant and defensive assistant. In 2009, he coached linebacker Ray Lewis. In addition, he was the Stanford Cardinal’s defensive coordinator under Jim Harbaugh in 2010 and followed Harbaugh to the 49ers in 2011.
Along with Harbaugh, he reversed the 49ers defense in 2011, resulting in 35 turnovers. Also, after firing Harbaugh, the 49ers released Fangio on January 15, 2015.
Fangio has agreed to become the defensive coordinator for the Bears. January 19, 2015. Fangio became an outside linebackers coach following the departure of Clint Hurtt in 2017.
Fangio improved the Bears’ defense from 30 to 14, 15 and 10 in three seasons. The PFWA was named Fangio Assistant Coach of the Year on January 17. A month later, at the 8th Annual NFL Honors, he received the same honor from the AP.
