Karla met her then-partner Paul Bernardo (“Ken”/”The Scarborough Rapist”) when she was just 17 years old. The two immediately hit it off and began dating. However, Bernardo was not a typical loving boyfriend – he was physically, mentally and verbally abusive to his girlfriend. Despite this, Homolka did not leave him and submitted to this terrible man for almost 4 years.

From the very beginning of their relationship, Karla noticed that Paul was attracted to her 15-year-old sister. In fact, during intimacy he would make her pretend to be Tammy.

What actually led to Tammy’s death?

On December 24, 1990, Tammy became the couple’s first victim. On the day of the horrific incident, Karla stole a bunch of sedatives from work. She mixed the drug into 15-year-old Tammy’s food and, later that night, offered her own sister as a “Christmas present” to her lover, Bernardo.

Speaking to police about Paul’s fascination with her sister Tammy, Karla said:

“He talked about how he really liked her and how she got really cute.”

She also explained that she agreed with his partner’s terrible decision,

“He just kept pushing and pushing and pushing. Finally I said, ‘Okay,’ thinking it would just be one time, that’s it, it would shut him up,” she added of her decision to help him rape her sister. “I thought he would stop bothering and hurting me.”

The whole incident took place in Homolka’s basement. Paul repeatedly raped young Tammy, while her sister held a halothane-soaked cloth over her mouth to keep her unconscious. Soon she died, choking on her own vomit. They even videotaped the entire horrific act.

Unfortunately, Tammy’s death was ruled an accident as no one detected drugs from her system during the autopsy. However, years later, in 1993, the case was reopened.

Young Tammy wasn’t her sister’s only victim

Karla’s younger sister’s death was just the beginning of something much more twisted. In addition, it was the beginning of “Barbie’s” serial killing journey with her so-called “Ken”.

Leslie Mahaffy and Kristien French were also two minors, ages 14 and 15, killed at the hands of Karla and Paul. These young girls were kidnapped, drugged, raped and murdered by the couple around 1991-1992. In addition, Leslie was dismembered and thrown out, while Kristen was tortured for days before being killed.

In addition, the infamous ex-couple had another victim besides them who escaped from them twice. Jane Doe (her original name is not given) was drugged and raped twice by Homolka and Bernardo, but did not face death.

Tammy’s “so-called” sister spent 12 years in prison for murdering her and two other minors

Karla’s sentence for the kidnapping, rape and murder of 3 minors, including her own sister, was dubbed “The Worst Plea Deal in Canadian History”. She apparently surrendered and faced a lesser statutory sentence. Shockingly, she was not punished for killing Tammy, but only charged with manslaughter of two other girls.

In fact, she has said he would point knives at her or threaten to kill her if she didn’t do what he said.

Therefore, after listening to Karla’s side of the story, the prosecutors gave her two choices: either testify against Bernardo and receive 12 years in prison for the murder of two minors, or face full charges for the kidnapping, rape and murder of 3 young children. girls. She chose the first option and spent 12 years in Ontario’s Kingston Prison for Women until 2005.
