Vanessa was raised alongside her three siblings – Pete Samuel ‘Sam’ Ortiz Jr., Tina and Sherry, in Indio by their millionaire father Pete Ortiz, and their mother Patricia Marcil, who was an herbalist. Pete was a Mexican, who became a contractor at a very young age, earning his first million by the time he turned 30; he died on September 14, 2017. Patricia is of French and Italian descent.

Vanessa grew up with an interest in acting, watching numerous shows and movies on TV and performing for the first time at the age of eight, later joining the Indio High School drama club while studying there. Vanessa was also physically active with soccer and volleyball and learned to play the guitar. After her matriculation, she enrolled at the College of the Desert in Palm Desert, California, graduating in 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in law.
