Spivey began her writing career in 2000 and joined the staff of the comedy sketch show “Mad TV”.
The show was inspired by “Mad” magazine and featured several segments, often borrowing from concepts popularized by the magazine. She stayed with the show for a year and then became a writer for the animated series “King of the Hill”. The sitcom follows the lives of the Hills family, airing on MTV, and is one of the longest-running series on Fox.
Around the same time, she was hired to be a staff writer for the late-night program “Saturday Night Live”.
